In order to promote teens to a higher level
of committed involvement with Head Start children, specifically in the
area of literacy, a youth stipend Incentive program was developed.
To be eligible for the stipend, youth must have been in middle or high
school and must have volunteered 2 hours a month for three months.
Forty-seven teens throughout Umatilla and Morrow county volunteered in
Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms. Some received the youth
stipend while others received class credit for their participation in the
classroom. In addition, eight different schools volunteered in the Head
Start classroom. These schools included the following: Pendleton High
school, Hermiston High School, Armand Larvae Middle school, Milton
Freewater High, Boardman and Umatilla High school.
