Elicery Andrade (Umatilla III)

Elicery has put in countless hours towards our Head Start classroom! If a teacher is gone she is the first to step up and offer to volunteer. She is always coming into the classroom on her own as well. She enjoys being a part of her daughters schooling as well as helping out with the various teacher responsibilities. She always has a sense of what needs to be done, whether it is setting the table, tying shoes or helping a child with a runny nose. She is a parent I can always count on! She is reliable and trustworthy and she treats every student as if they were her own child. Even though her first language is Spanish she never hesitates to try and communicate with me. She also has an interest in learning English and is always asking for new words to add to her vocabulary. And, even though my Spanish is not very good, she is always helping me to make mine better  Elicery looks at being in the classroom as an opportunity to help and learn and not just a commitment she made so her daughter could be in Head Start. She truly cares about others and sometimes that is very hard to come by.

Elicery is a volunteer that most teachers dream about! She never hesitates to do the dirty work and she is always a joy to have in the classroom. She is a wonderful parent who takes her daughters education into the highest consideration and when she is in the classroom she looks after the other students in the same way. She is always thinking about ways to help. She never just sits down and listens to the story or watches the teacher zip coats. She is helping a student who is having a hard day to calm down or she is tying shoes or she is joining in on free choice time to give some students some extra attention that day. In the 5 years that I have taught I have never had a volunteer like Elicery. She is kind, considerate, proper, trustworthy, loving, and someone you can count on. I believe that she deserves this award simply because she doesn’t do this for the recognition! Elicery volunteers to better herself, her daughter and her community!
